Guest
Heard this no the radio t'other day A story about the actor Bernard Breslau (? spelling), well known I'm sure to us oldies, He was a tall / broad chap. However a young actress was fawning & flirting with him a showbiz party. A bit deep in her cups, I mean a little tipsy, stop sniggering @ the back there ! She asked Bernard, " oooh you are a big strong man, are you all in proportion?" as quick as a flash he replied " No my dear, if I were I would be over 10 feet tall ! bones
I looked him up on Wikipedia just out of interest, as I only really remember him from the carry On films. Well that and that he was often quoted as an example of acromegaly, a hormone imbalance that creates excessive bone growth He was a very tall man, exactly 6' 7. 5" (2. 01 m), the biggest of the Carry On team, head-and-shoulders over fellow Carry On regular, Barbara Windsor, who is 4'10" (1. 47 m). He made great efforts to follow up any role, learning a genuine African language for Carry on Up the Jungle. He died after collapsing in his dressing room at the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park, London, where he was to play Grumio in the New Shakespeare Company's production of Taming of the Shrew, the day after the death of fellow comedy performer Les Dawson. Guest
That's interesting, Bernie dying the day after Les Dawson. I remember Dawson going but I don't remember Breslaw, obviously overshadowed by the bigger star. Same thing happened with Presley, most people of a certain age remember his passing but not so many remember that Marc Bolam (T Rex) went exactly one calendar month later. Even fewer remember that Groucho Marx, comedy genius that successfully made the transition from music hall to movies, died three days after Presley. Nobody noticed.
