Refurbishing comstar wheels

Postby John Adams » Sun Mar 18, 2012 9:51 pm

The front wheel of my CX500A has started to rust on each of the comstars so was wondering what method to use to clean them or do I try and find a wheel in a good condition?

John.

Simple answer not enough use, to much time spent looking at it.

Rust is part of a CX its all around you.

If the "spokes" are slightly spotted or surface rusted, use Scotch pad but not emery cloth or a grinder or a rotary wire brush and dont use a blast gun or else the whole wheel will suffer as the grit does its stuff.
Baking powder blasting ok as its water soluble and wont affect the bearings, ideal for betteen the spokes and rim but check its not been used for grit blasting prior to your work. Wont shift rust well but does clean all metals.

Wet and dry paper possible used with care washed and dried ASAP.

Remember that if its a non soluble abrasive it will do more than local cleaning.
