Well scabby rocker covers?

Postby cxrestart » Mon Oct 04, 2010 1:26 pm

Anyone got any scabby rocker covers?

Hopefully soon I can steam my bikes (submarine) engine

I've got a fair bit of water out of the engine but the last of it will need to be 'steamed' out.

Problem is on my engine the crankcase breather is low down at the rear of the engine - just above the TI gubbins.

I need to provide a high level vent to let the steam escape when the engine is run...

Best I can think of so far is to drill a hole in the top face of each rocker cover

So if anyone has any scabby rocker covers that they could donate to my steam powered submarine project that would be great :D :D

Thanks

Martin

Martin forgive me if i have read your post wrong but i would be reluctant to put "steam pressure" into your engine
because that will put even more water inside.....chris

Chris

What I mean is that when I run the engine, and it gets hot, the remaining river water inside it will turn into steam.

If the steam can't get out - it will just turn back into water when the engine cools and I'll be back where I started.

The diesel flushing has taken some of the water out but after only a few minutes running the engine oil was turned into mayonnaise. I don't want to run the engine any longer than I need to to get the water out. The crankcase breather on my engine is at a very low point of the engine so it won't be a very good vent.

Im hoping high level vents - from the rocker covers will allow the most steam out in the shortest time. :D :D

You should run the engine with the diesel in there very hot which will absorb the water. Then run it with some cheap oil to lube it, then drain it.

Just turning the engine over on the starter wont really do anything, as its not being drawn up by the oil pump.

Gary

I was quite surprised that when spinning the engine on the starter with diesel in the crankcase the oil light did go out

It did take a few more seconds longer than with oil but the light went out and stayed out while I spun the engine over.

Thats fair enough Martin, but it wont circulate around the engine plus needs to get hot so as to absorb the water.

I'd still take it apart completely Martin and clean it bit by bit - otherwise you risk not having the engine for long.

Eric

That would be the perfect solution, of course, but I can't afford the time or expense of doing a full strip-down.

My latest plan is based on advice I've received from folks who have done the same to rescue waterlogged engines.

Any scabby rocker covers anyone?

Martin,

Give me your address, and I'll post a pair. Do you want me to drill them first, you would you prefer to do it yourself?

Martin,

Just a thought - would a number of small holes be better than one larger one? There's a fair amount of oil being splashed around inside the covers - a series of small holes might result in less oil escaping?

Good idea Alan :D :D :D

I did leave one of the rocker covers loose while I last ran the engine. The oil was P***** out along the lower edge of rocker cover

I'll try putting my fingers over some of the holes and see if I can get a tune out of the old girl. It could be a first - CX steam organ
